Champlain Valley Localsourcers

Champlain Valley Localsourcers is the first regional Localsourcers group, for people living in the Champlain Valley of Vermont (and nearby New York), including Burlington, Middlebury, St. Albans, Essex, Colchester, Williston, Shelburne, Plattsburgh, and other towns. Anyone interested in localsourcing, whether from the Champlain Valley or not, is always welcome to attend meetings and get involved.

The 2012 Locavore Index rates Vermont first among the 50 states for commitment to locally-sourced foods based on number of CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture organizations) and farmers markets per capita. (Full disclosure: the index is compiled by The Strolling of the Heifers, a Vermont organization, but it's compiled based mainly on USDA and census data.)

Champlain Valley Localsourcers will hold regular meetings in and around Burlington as well as providing ways for members to connect through this Web site. If you're interested in coming to our meetings, learning more about localsourcing food and other products, or if you're interested in presenting at a meeting, please get in touch through the contact page and/or by joining.

Our next meeting will be

Wednesday, March 27th
6:30-8:30PM
at Fletcher Free Libary, Fletcher Room, Burlington

At this meeting we'll have a presentation on local CSAs: what's been working well for years, what's new, what options are out there, and how to choose. Luc has been gathering information on Champlain Valley CSAs in the process of developing a CSA Finder tool for the Web site, and has unearthed a lot of appealing options.

Everyone interested in local foods and local economies is welcome.

We'll share information and questions about local foods and discuss plans and ideas for the group. Musicians are invited to bring instruments for the social half-hour. Please do bring any books or resources you'd like to share.

One common definition of "local food" is food produced within a 100 mile radius. For reference, here's a map of what that radius is around Burlington, Vermont: almost all of Vermont, much of New Hampshire, northeastern upstate New York, and a big chunk of southern Quebec. (I was hoping it might encompass a bit of the Maine coast for seafood but alas, no such luck.)
